This is Nikalas’s last day guest blogging and I just want to thank him for a fantastic week of posts! Keep up with him in the future right here.

Paul Rand is best know for his corporate design work in the 1960’s. His incredibly original style was heavily influenced by the european art scene. He also created a number of children’s books and Chronicle Books have now reprinted them. I Know a Lot of Things is bursting with raw energy and has a feeling a innocent wonder of the world. Compared to the wised up texts of todays children’s books the narrative style is all over the place but this is Paul Rand through and through and his bold, energetic illustration and design cement the feeling of the wonder of the world. The 60’s were a decade when children’s books really were created by artists and were often children’s first introduction to art as well as literature. Paul Rand’s work in children’s books is a perfect example of that more gentle time in children’s publishing. Each page is a rather simple and clear diagram or visual representation of miscellaneous facts and figures such as fictional space crafts, how fish breathe, flags of the world and Nineteenth century industry. All represented in bold retro graphics that could easily make nice screen printed posters and hung on your wall.

This is a new but identical reprint of the 1964 original. Part story, part visual play Love is wonderfully constructed book that turns all the techniques of book design on their head. At the core of the book is a very profound story about a little orphan girl and her drab and loveless existence. Through a brilliant approach of cut-out techniques, coloured paper and naive illustrations the story reveals itself to the reader through holes and flaps as you peel back the pages. What is so great about this book is how such a wonderfully simple story can be elevated to even greater levels through the process of design and really shows how much visuals can add to a story.

Sweaterweather is Sara Varon’s debut graphic novel and written entirely without words. The title gives you a pretty good idea of the style of the book which weaves a lovely cosy and fuzzy feeling around you as you read it. In the first story two friends, a rabbit and a tortoise are walking through the woods in a snow storm and get so cold that they both retreat into tortoise’s shell to shelter. Once inside they make themselves some hot drinks to warm up and then knit a scarf for rabbit and a hat for tortoise so they can continue on their way without feeling too cold. Coming from a screen printing background of handmade zines Varon’s has a do it yourself, handmade feel which oozes charm and individuality. Towards the back of the book are some lovely pages of paper doll characters you can cut out and make with extra clothes to pin on and a gorgeous page of Chickenopolis stamps and a few postcards.

This week we have a treat. UK book designer and illustrator Nikalas Catlow is going to be sharing five of his favorite books with us. Learn more about him here. Thanks Nikalas!

The ACME Novelty Library is not just a book to read it’s also an object of great beauty. Not only is the content brilliantly written and illustrated, the cover, paper and ink is satisfying to touch and to smell. This is a book that satisfies all of the senses. Rather a large volume at 390mm high and 235mm wide, Ware has created this fantastic series of pastiche collections of comic strips that hark back to the 1930’s and 40’s heyday of comic book illustration. Ware’s story telling ability is subtle and sensitive, dealing with the mundane lives of people and their thoughts, insecurities and dashed hopes and aspirations. Everything about this book is a work of art. You can buy this book here or see original sketches of Chris Ware’s here.
