If you missed the last post announcing our book coming out this Fall with Chronicle Books, you should probably read that first, right here.

The homepage image is a tiny detail from Jordin Isip’s page (left) connecting to Paul Hornschemeier’s page (right). I love how Paul continued Jordin’s string and flipped the background colors for his following page.

Last week we got to see a proof of our Exquisite Book. A proof is the closest version to your actual book as possible. It’s as if they just print one book. You make a proof so that you can have a final look at everything and make sure it’s exactly how you want. Usually this is past the point of changing any major edits because text plates have already been made. You use a proof to make final color adjustments and other production tweaks.

I mentioned before that our book has an extremely unique format. Thanks to Chronicle for working so hard to help us figure it out. When you first open the book, there are ten regular bound pages that hold our introduction, Dave Egger’s forward, and “Twenty Questions” with artists from the book. Then the next section is ten accordions that all fold out 12 pages long. These have all the artist’s connecting artwork on them plus an opener and closer done by us that connects each section the the next. The last section is ten or so more pages of artists’ biographies. If you followed the horizon line from the cover of the book, it connects through every page of the entire book- connecting all the way to the back cover- meaning it connects full circle with itself!

Here is a sneak peek of the back of the book (it’s a photo of our proof). Inside the mound, lists all of the artists who appear in the book, in order of their appearance. You may notice that we don’t have a bar code, price, summary, or any of that other info that you usually see on a back cover. This is because our book is getting shrink wrapped. Luckily, we are putting in a separate piece of paper inside the wrap with all that boring stuff. That meant we had free range to do almost whatever we wanted on the back of the book. We felt like this was a good place to show off the full list of amazing talent who have contributed.

Stay tuned for more posts about our book in the coming weeks…

When Matt and Jenny were visiting me in New York we took a stroll around the shops in Soho. While at the Taschen store, we admired the murals covering the walls. Then while browsing the design shop Moss, we were drooling over their textiles and found one design that was obviously made by the same artist as the murals we just saw. That artist turned out to be Beatriz Milhazes, an established artist and designer who is best known for mixing her Brazilian cultural aesthetic with Modernist painting styles. After I got home from our city excursion, Beatriz’s name would not get out of my head- it sounded so familiar. Then I remembered. I once bought a book of her work just from seeing the book’s cover on Amazon. This is that book. You would think that since I had a book of this artist’s work I would have recognized it when we saw it. The truth is this book is so much text and so little plates that I remember being very disappointed by it. But after rediscovering her work I recently took it out for another look. I love the pieces in the book, but wish they were presented bigger. I also still wish there was more of them- I am sharing about half of them. But there is a great interview with her by Christian Lacroix- everything printed in both French and English. If anyone knows a better book with more samples of her work, please share the title below. For now you can get this book here

I was browsing the magazine section in Borders the other day with my parents and came across this 3×3 Illustration Annual. I don’t usually buy annuals because they are usually a $20+ pricetag and I have an ever growing bookmarks page full of portfolios just a click away. But I just couldn’t put this book down. Every page had amazing work and I recognized more than half the names as some of my favorite illustrators. The quality of the work was just too outstanding and I kept flipping and flipping that when my parents were ready to go, I had to hold them up to buy it. I don’t know much about 3×3 magazine or their contests but apparently I should! You and I can learn more here.

I have been drooling over this book for months and now that I bought a new camera I can actually share it with everyone. It’s called Formal Addictive Programs by Nadine Nakanishi of Sonnenzimmer. In this first release by Nadine she attempts to shed some light on her creative process, while “focusing on the commonalities of figurative and abstract images” (her words, not mine). The book offers 18 simple instructions to help the reader expand upon a singular idea. For example, the first couple instruction in the book go something like this…

#1 Draw a grid system of an existing drawing and establish anchor points.
#2 Focus on those anchor points.
#3 Connect your anchor points while disassociating yourself from your original drawing. Connect them while envisioning a new one.

Not only does the book help with some free-form exploration, the production of the book is super on point including a screenprinted vellum dust jacket, a beefy text weight stock on the inside and 2 color offset printing. If this book doesn’t help you explore some new directions in your work then either you are really amazing or slightly delusional. Pick it up from the Sonnenzimmer store.
The murals can be best viewed from the elevated transit line running along 45th to 63rd streets along the Market Street corridor. I’m definitely going to take a trip to Philly soon and visiting his work will be my first stop. But for those who can’t make it, there are supposedly two books coming out documenting the project and a fun interview here. In the meantime, I was looking to fill more of my Steve Powers fix and decided to purchase this book published a few years ago. It’s full of his graphic work and awesome type designs. The book has lots of detail images so you can really see his paint strokes in some of the pieces. Pick up a copy here.

When I first flipped through this book, I noticed something was odd about the some of the photos of the studios. I couldn’t put my finger on what it was- maybe the lighting? Turns out half the photos of the studios are actually photos of miniatures of the studios crafted by artist Joe Fig. It blows my mind how incredibly crafted these little dioramas are! Every tiny paint tube, paint splatter, dirty palette, and rag is recreated at a tiny scale- even some of the artists at work. Joe visited these painters, Fred Tomaselli, Amy Sillman, Chuck Close, Ryan McGinness, to see their studios firsthand for reference. He also interviewed each of the artists about their work and their studio. He asked them questions like “When you are contemplating your work do you sit or stand? ” or “How far along are you on this painting”. I love reading the personal honest answers from the artists. These interviews, pictures of his dioramas, and photos of the real space are all collected in this interesting book which you get right here

Yesterday a package came from Spain with a whole bunch of stunning little books. They were sent from the publisher SD Edicions who also published K which I wrote about a long while back. Out of the little pile of books they sent, this one really struck my eye. It’s an illustrated poem by Roberta Gorni. I love her drawings which she created with loose pencil lines and blotches of color, mostly red. The images have so much emotion and even while the text in in Spanish, I feel like I am getting a good sense of the mood she is portraying- sad and lonely… which seems about accurate to how I feel during winter. Get a copy of this book here. Learn more about Roberta here.
