We were excited back in May to share a peek into Mattias Adolfsson’s fantastically imaginary, obsessively detailed, sketchbooks. Now, his new book The First In Line, published by Sanatorium, compiles numerous drawings from his sketchbooks. There is even a gorgeous limited edition that includes an original drawing. The First In Line begins with a Q & A with Mattias, and includes prints of full sketchbooks spreads and well as close-ups on the insane detail.

When you try to think of design celebrities (currently living), there aren’t too many to name. I think of “design celebrity” as someone who is acclaimed in the design world, who might also have recognition outside of design culture. Maira Kalman, Steven Heller, Todd Oldham and Paula Scher would be my picks. What do you think? I heard Paula Scher give a lecture once and it was the most inspiring talk I’ve seen. She was smart and tough and honest and the breadth of her work was immaculate. One of the topics she spoke about was doing self driven projects that you love like the map paintings she makes. These paintings are enormous, 7ft x 12ft enormous! Each is full of colorful insanely packed names of the countries, cities, boundaries, and areas making an explosion of gorgeous lettering filling the canvas. It’s easy to forget how many countries there are that you haven’t visited and how populated the world is, but somehow these maps remind me of our buzzing world. This new book from Princeton Architectural Press is a beautiful collection of these works. Through large, full bleed reproductions, not only of the paintings in their entirety, but tons of details, you can see the meticulous brush strokes of each of the letters. I’ve been in love with Paula’s maps since I first set eyes on them and inquired with galleries about purchasing prints even – too bad even the prints are way, way out of my price range. I was thrilled when recently 20×200 made some lower priced editions of “The World” available but I am even more happy to have this book so I can oogle the entire series of them. You can get a copy right here.

I was thrilled today when this colorful book illustrated by André da Loba arrived! André da Loba is a maker of images, toys, animations, and is an amazing storyteller. He was one of the first, and also the best, teacher I had studying illustration at Parsons. André’s work shows so much illustration can be: in class he brought to life painted wooden blocks, built cardboard animals, and painted with brooms on huge paper. This book is no exception to André’s brilliance. O Arenque Fumado, or The Smoked Herring, is a poem by Charles Cros, originally published in 1872. Here, it is illustrated by André da Loba and published by Bruaá Editora. Inside the box, O Arenque Fumado begins with a colorful cover, scattered with bright little shapes. Every image is textured like a block print, and feels special. The book then opens out into a large yellow herring, filled with little shapes and images and text. You can purchase a copy of the book here — a delight even if you can’t read the Portugese text!

The Gifted is a small picture book illustrated by Michael Taylor and published by Warren Editions in Cape Town, South Africa. Beginning with its sparkly gold cover, The Gifted is a special experience. The images are all silkscreened by hand in their printmaking studio, and the book is hand bound and assembled. Even the hero of the story is important, and each page follows her adventures through the week. On Monday she’s galavanting around on her horse, hunting down a deer and fox on Tuesday and Wednesday, and slaying a giant beast by Thursday. Taylor’s quick, inky lines and washes bring life into every scene. Everything feels alive and moving. And our hero, always dressed in her finest, jumps from page to page before retiring on Sunday in a fluffy fur coat, glass of wine in hand.
I thought it would be fun to share a couple of the mishaps and almost-disasters that happened while we were working on Drawn In:

If you’re not sure what Drawn In is about- check out the previous posts to catch up here, here and here.

The book was originally supposed to be 45 artists.
When all of the sketchbooks were photographed and sent back to the artists (via FedEx-thank you for being so reliable!), I started sending out the interviews. All of the artists sent them back except for one. I couldn’t get ahold of Patrick Gildersleeves. He had disappeared! At first we were so worried, but then I found on his blog that he had left for a big trip and wouldn’t have email for a while. So we waited and laid out his pages. Weeks went by and we were on to a second review of the book and still couldn’t reach Patrick. I should have let him know sooner when I would need the interview and assumed he’d be available. Sadly, as time flew by we decided we had to cut Patrick from the book. We had great images of his sketchbook, but no interview and no signed release form. This meant I needed a replacement sketchbook and that I would have to plan a shoot for another sketchbook. I had two spreads to fill. How could I rent all that equipment again? Could I just change the artist count to 44? What about the page count… there were four pages blank?

Ultimately, I decided to use the leftover space to add an illustrated foreword to the book. I really liked Dave Eggers foreword to The Exquisite Book came out, so I decided to do the same type of thing again. I immediately thought of one of my favorite comic artists Vanessa Davis. I was thrilled when she agreed to work in my extremely tight deadline. She wound up making a funny, amazing series about sketchbooks that creates a great light-hearted start to the book. We were able to photoshop it so it looked like it appeared in a sketchbook. I am so pleased with the results- here’s one of the spreads:

I was super sad that Patrick’s sketchbooks couldn’t be included in the book and when he returned, he felt terrible that he missed the deadline. So today I wanted to share some of the pages from his sketchbook that we shot:

Uh oh it’s upside down!
When the book was all done, the files were in and it was off to the printer I was so excited. I had just run into Leif Parsons, one of the artists from the book, at the Outsider Art Fair. Leif was one of the few artists in the book who had a very different kind of sketchbook. He handed me a huge portfolio box full of drawings and called it his sketchbook. So we shot all his drawings as piles of loose pages. After seeing Leif at the fair, I emailed him and randomly decided to show him his spreads in the book since I was pretty excited about how good they looked. Leif emailed back something along the lines of-”cool (the drawing on the second page is upside down, but it does not really matter).” I read that line and almost had a heart attack! I opened up the file and saw, yes if you look at the drawing the right way there is a man(?) smoking a cigarette.

Here it is upside down (right top drawing)

Oh no! I felt terrible. I was supposed to be sensitive to this type of thing as an artist myself and as a fan of his work. I should have looked more carefully. The book had gone to press and it was a Friday afternoon. I immediately wrote my editor and designer at Quarry. They completely understood the mishap but told me it probably wouldn’t be possible to fix at this stage in the process. Leif seemed pretty unconcerned when I apologized but I still felt awful. Luckily, I got a email from Quarry on *Saturday* that they would be able to stop the printing and fix the error. Whew!! I was so happy and thankful to Quarry for doing that. My weekend got so much better. There’s is a little clue that this was once upside down though. If you look closely, you’ll notice that the shadow cast from his drawings is now at the top. But at least the funny smoking duck is visible:

After doing our first book, I’ve learned to expect to notice a handful of tiny mistakes when I receive my advanced copy. Making a book is such a long process so when you finally see the end result it’s a bit underwhelming. You’ve looked at all the pages hundreds of times so seeing them again, now bound, is not as rewarding as you might expect at first. For me the reward comes later. Watching people look through the book and getting feedback is the most fun part. I love hearing what friends favorite pages are or things that these drawings remind them of. With Drawn In, the biggest and most common compliment I’ve gotten is that the book has inspired them to revisit their sketchbook or start their own. That’s a wonderful feeling to know that maybe some sketchbooks have been used or started as a result of looking through this book.

Big thanks to Patrick for letting me share his pages and the story behind them! You can see even more from his sketchbooks right here.

The first I posted about a while back here is now very hard to find.

For 365 days, January 2010 to December 2010, artist Lisa Congdon documented one of her many personal collections (or drew an imagined collection). She photographed and posted the images to a blog called A Collection a Day. In a way, the site became it’s own collection, a collection of images of collections. That collection has now become a beautiful little book. The book comes in an adorable classic collector’s tin. It’s a very thick little book, each page devoted to one day’s collection, labeled with date and title. Lisa’s collections are mostly a range of small vintage objects like bread tags, dice, playing cards, sticks, mugs, lightbulbs, erasers, drafting stencils, pinecones, old portrait photographs. They almost all could fit into this tin in real life, which makes this tin feel very appropriate and clever.

Flipping through the book made me think a lot about collections: What makes something a collection? How many items do you need? How similar do they need to be? What collections do I have? If there aren’t too many rules then I have amassed hundreds of collections as well, most people have. We just aren’t aware that that’s what they are. Arranged, they wouldn’t be as nice looking as Lisa’s, as there is something to say about curation, but looking around I do have probably 4 kinds of kitchen sponges, twenty kinds of cleaners in bottles, a dozen patterned kitchen mitts, fifty spice containers of all shapes and sizes, forks from all different flatware sets…What I love most about this project is that it it makes you look at common objects a bit differently. By putting them in a collection, you are forced to notice the individuality of each piece by comparing it to the others surrounding it. And then together they are something else, arranged into an organized composition. They belong to a set, and what else is in that set defines the group. Most of Lisa’s collections are organized by kind of thing. She places all of the same kinds of things together: bread tags, stamps, beach rocks. But what if the collection was not organized by kind, but by shape: ten various round things, fifteen long thin pointy objects. Or by subject: ten things you can find in a school classroom, six things that remind me of you. There are endless ways to organize and make collections when you start to think about it. Suddenly, everything can be organized and arranged this way, all of your stuff, all of your thoughts, your whole life- it’s all just collections. Ok I’ll stop. But this is what the book did to my afternoon. Pick up a copy here. Thank you Lisa and well done as always Uppercase!

I can’t say enough good things about Nigel Peake. His work is truly amazing and after meeting him last year, it only makes me appreciate his work more. So I am thrilled to hold in my hands the biggest collection of his intricate drawings yet. Inspired by natural surroundings, Nigel depicts fields, hills, barns, wood piles, leaves, birds and more, all in tiny ink lines and beautiful watercolor. His pieces feel calm and meditative. I really like what Nigel says in his introduction “I used to help out in my neighbor’s gardens. My favorite part of this was cutting the grass with a handmower–especially if it was long and over-grown, thick and entangled with thistles and daisies. It was during these moments that I could have that wonderful experience of creating a path where none existed before. Back and forth at a slow pace, the mower and I pushed the grass one direction and then another, filling the field with stripes. When necessary, I would cut back the hedges and trees. the closer I got to the objects, the more I would see their hidden structures and textures–to inspect the twists, twirls, and eruptions involved in a bud on a branch.” I think Nigel’s drawings capture that feeling exactly. This book is a neat little package, a thick, small hardcover. And while I love small books as objects themselves, I can’t help but hope Nigel’s next book will be a really large format so we can get even more lost in his work. Get a copy of the book right here.
