Book By Its Cover

I’m not sure what this Portugese picture book is about but the illustrations are totally awesome. They mix collage and drawing and texture in a way I haven’t seen before. The style is nostalgic and vintage feeling but created in a new, fresh and interesting way. The characters have simple faces but their hair is very sculptural. Objects and backgrounds are made of different pieces of papers all with variations of the same tones. The palette is browns ad tans and beiges with bright pops of orange and royal blue. I can stare at these pages all day. Pick up a copy here.

According to the website (I’m portuguese ;)) it’s about they day when all the “dots” (we call them “pontos”) decided to make a strike and not go to work… which means that besides “punctuation points” (we call “ponto final” to full-stop) the vanishing point and the meeting point also disappeared and everything turned into a chaos…

LOVE this. This 60s-70s era inspired collaged style children’s book reminds me of Ezra Jack Keat’s work, which was a favorite of mine as a child. I’m also really happy to see a Portuguese language book here as well. The title “Greve” means strike, like a worker’s strike. The above commenter Carolina summed it up well.
