Book By Its Cover

Marc Boutavant

In this French children’s book you get to tour around the world with a little bear, Mouk. Except the difference is this world is full of adorable animals in people clothing who speak French to one another. Who can resist smiling at a koala in a Hawaiian shirt or a peacock riding a bicycle? The colors are wildly bright to match. The book is made of these plastic coated pages and the back of the book has two pages of re-stickable stickers so that you can add some more excitement to each scenes. I was happy to find this book in Montreal because I recognized the illustrator, Marc Boutavant’s work from that Playpen book but hadn’t seen his books elsewhere. I think you’d be able to find this book online but it happens to be temporarily out of stock here.

You have an inspiring blog Julia, which I love visiting daily!
I accidentally discovered Boutavant’s work last weekend, and was instantly charmed.
A closer source for his French books is www.renaud-bray.com, from the Quebec bookstore chain. The website can be viewed in English and you’ll find about a dozen books illustrated by him.
Thanks for sharing Mouk!

Thanks for making Marc Boutavant an international superstar !!!
You can watch the “boutavanthèque” of a compulsive collector (my wife) here.
If you like Marc Boutavant you may also like the work of Ramona Badescu.

I picked up a couple of wonderful Boutavant jigsaws in Paris (Abracadabra and The Iceskaters). They are 54 piece extra long landscape format and are stuffed with his characters. There is a same sized poster that comes with each which can be layed down and the jigsaws built on.
I’m not sure if my 5 year old or me ennjoys them more.
