Book By Its Cover

4.15.09
Lowell A. Siff, Gian Berto Vanni

review by Nikalas Catlow

This is a new but identical reprint of the 1964 original. Part story, part visual play Love is wonderfully constructed book that turns all the techniques of book design on their head. At the core of the book is a very profound story about a little orphan girl and her drab and loveless existence. Through a brilliant approach of cut-out techniques, coloured paper and naive illustrations the story reveals itself to the reader through holes and flaps as you peel back the pages. What is so great about this book is how such a wonderfully simple story can be elevated to even greater levels through the process of design and really shows how much visuals can add to a story.
