Praia-mar
In the mail came the most lovely large picture book from Portugese publisher Planeta Tangerina. The book, in only pictures, no words, illustrates the feeling of enjoying the beach. There’s a gorgeous limited palette and the characters are very simply drawn, yet have so much character. They play, float, swim, do handstands and snorkel in the water, lounge in the sand and find pretty shells. This book made me crave a beach trip like crazy! I can’t wait to do all those things myself. I can smell the sunscreen. I’m excited to learn about this publisher because it looks like they put out a lot of other beautifully illustrated books by Bernardo Carvalho and others. Check them out and order a copy here.

This is fun: today I was mentioning Bernardo Carvalho on FB, for the book “Un Dìa en la Playa” (http://librosdelzorrorojo1.blogspot.com/2010/06/un-dia-en-la-playa.html) published by the Spanish El Zorro Rojo, another lovely book!!! The subject is similar but this other book is wordless. The use of colour and image cuts he adopts in the images above reminds me as well of Blexbolex’s artworks too…

I love planeta Tangerina, the only portuguese editorial with wordless picture books made by portuguese authors.

Lovely! I only have one small critical remark: it’s a pity that those beautiful illustrations are cut in two by the fold of the book…

It is a pleasure to have this so talented small group of people – the ones that make Planeta Tangerina – in Portugal. Many other books of them are really worth to know.
