Dutton at the time she wrote this picture book, so she worked with Diane, as well as designed the book. It is indeed a lovingly told universal American immigrant story with the illustrations being a perfect compliment to the words. Diane created her illustrations on a vellum-like paper with an undercoat of wash before applying the colored pencil. How wonderful that this gem found it's way to your wonderful web site. Thank you!
