Sketchbook Week
This is a fifteen-page accordian book of reproductions of Adrian Tomine’s street and subway portraits from his sketchbook. Each has the date and location and a few observation notes, for example–”Nodded off as soon as they sat down. His mouth moved as if he was chewing.” I love watching people on the subway(until they notice and I get the evil eye) but I am usually too afraid to draw them unless they are sleeping. It’s nice to open up the full accordian because you can pretend you’re sitting on the train and his drawings are sitting across from you. This book is published by the lovely Buenaventura Press and can be purchased directly from their site. Looks like there’s still some signed copies left too. Also if you don’t know Adrian’s work from his comics Optic Nerve or his graphic novel Summer Blonde, they are definitely worth checking out. I also love seeing Adrian’s drawings on the covers and interiors of the New Yorker adding something young and fresh to their pages.
