review by Nikalas Catlow Sweaterweather is Sara Varon’s debut graphic novel and written entirely without words. The title gives you a pretty good idea of the style of the book which weaves a lovely cosy and fuzzy feeling around you as you read it. In the first story two friends, a rabbit and a tortoise are walking through the woods in a snow storm and get so cold that they both retreat into tortoise’s shell to shelter. Once inside they make themselves some hot drinks to warm up and then knit a scarf for rabbit and a hat for tortoise so they can continue on their way without feeling too cold. Coming from a screen printing background of handmade zines Varon’s has a do it yourself, handmade feel which oozes charm and individuality. Towards the back of the book are some lovely pages of paper doll characters you can cut out and make with extra clothes to pin on and a gorgeous page of Chickenopolis stamps and a few postcards. |
