Chris Ware

Sketchbook Week
If you don’t think Chris Ware is an artistic genius after reading Jimmy Corrigan or looking at all the books and type design he’s done, then check out work from his sketchbooks in the Acme Novelty Datebook. This man can do it all. He has incredible realistically rendered sketches and watercolor paintings filling up the pages alongside his amazing comic style. It’s so nice to see them juxtaposed – the real world and his comic world meet. As a kid I always thought the people who could really draw, which then meant drawing realistically, were the artists. Comic book artists were people who couldn’t draw as well, but were still pretty good, so they made comics. If only I had seen this sketchbook then. It’s such a personal book. There’s journal entries, and notes, and little lists of things to get done which makes me remember he’s a real person and not some crazy machine with perfect penmenship that can churn out great work over and over.

Chris Ware is amazing. Thanks for this post: I hadn’t seen anything but his comics before this, but he’s an outstanding draftsman too. WOW.

Beautiful, I keep my own sketch books together too but I have nothing comparing to this (I realise it isn’t a sketch book, but it is much the same thing). I suppose the closest I can get to it is the collage I make for my wife every year, collecting pictures, notes and images of everything we’ve done, seen or visited over he last 12 months. Probably sounds a dorky kinda thing for a bloke to do but she loves it. :))

There’s no end to Chris Ware’s imagination, craft and abundance. I agree with you that he bridges great art work and talent with the graphic-novel/comic genre. His mind takes you to so many places…thanks for posting this one.
