Book By Its Cover

Tom Gauld

When I met Tom Gauld at MoCCA this year I was a little bit surprised at how young he is. I suppose his themes and meticulous hatched drawings had me imagining an old crazy weirdo guy. He was amused by my amazement that he was young and hip and drew an excellent little drawing in my book. That book was this one, The Gigantic Robot. The format is almost like a board book you had as a kid with only about twenty very thick pages with rounded corners. The story is about a secret weapon robot that never gets used and ultimately disintegrates to a pile of rocks. As usual I enjoy his dark humor and beautiful ink drawings. You can get a copy of this book here.

It kind of reminds me of ‘the Iron Giant’ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129167/
which was a brilliant animation!
