Book By Its Cover

Kevin Hooyman

This graphic novel is so densly packed with drawings filled with tiny lines, you will get lost for hours. Every time I open it I am surprised once again by how obsessive these drawings are. It brings to mind Brian Chippendale’s comic work, which also uses every inch of every page. The narrative is very philosophical- a bird and a dog discuss whether numbers are real, owls ask each other if using power to control others is ok, two twin men with long beards talk about how to divide all of time by the number of people, so that everyone can have a special moment to be a hero. It also reminds me of Anders Nielsen’s work, where little birds often ponder life. I picked up The Themes of the Day at Printed Matter. They were also selling a limited edition signed and numbered poster called Luxury Planet Escape Pod by Kevin for only fifteen dollars- a real deal. To see more of Kevin’s work check out his website.
