Book By Its Cover

I think this book is actually some sort of catalog/book for the vintage French children’s online library/bookstore Aaaaatchoum (which is the sneeze sound in French). I found the Japanese site of the same name that has all these books available for purchase here. This catalog/book itself is a treasure because it’s full to the brim with pictures of amazing French children’s book covers and interiors from the 1960s and 70s. The only problem is the pictures are tiny. But it gives you a great introduction to mid-century French illustrators or books you may want to find out more about. I got the catalog/book at the Japanese bookstore Kinokuniya here in NYC- which just moved locations and became three stories big! (They do have other locations in other cities listed on their site.)You can also order it online right here. But if you really don’t need the paper version when you can see all the covers and interiors of these books in the Librairie section of the site. I would even attempt to buy a few of these vintage books if I had a Japanese speaking friend around. (Thanks Lisa for reminding me of this book!)

Tonight I am off to Dallas to be a judge in the DSVC Professional Show. Yay! Any readers from Dallas??

The colors and illustrations are terrific– I also love that you can see elements of this style coming back in some illustrations today. Great inspiration.
