Book By Its Cover

I don’t know much about typography so I don’t mind having a few books around that I can go to for some inspiration. I picked this book up on a sale rack at a local bookstore for 8 bucks- but now it’s even selling from amazon sellers for $5 (originally priced at $24.95). It’s well worth it. It’s big and beautifully laid out, has nice rounded corners and is full of the best looking lettering and typefaces from mostly avant-garde modernist publications. I love the typeface that is combined with photographs of a dancer making her body into the letters. There are also logos, ads, photos of pamphlets and products, graphics, symbols and even eye charts all in pretty printed colors. Graphic designers- you will love it. Pick up a copy here.

I have this book in my office. If I ever feel depressed about the state of graphic design (or retina searing fonts like comic sans) I will just pick this book up and let my mind wander.

I really love the eye charts on the cover (and in the book). There is something amazing about taking a letter form out of context and just looking at it as a conceptual form. Maybe that is why so many people tattoo chinese characters on their bodies without a clue to the meaning.
