Despite the ridiculously ugly cover design and marblized paper end pages, this book is a great reference for Alexander Girard’s textile work. It’s full of close-up images of the fabrics he did for Herman Miller. Sometimes the images are so close you can see the thread weave or the results of overlapping with silkscreen. Other pictures show his original drawings or the actual enormous screens they used to print with. There’s also some very funny out-dated images of the wall hangings and furniture textiles in context. His color combinations make me swoon and his abstractions of people and objects continue to awe me. I keep looking at his Eden design (below right) and think about the Dwell sheets on my bed right now. I think his work will continue to inspire designers forever. Get this book here. |
