Book By Its Cover

Geoff McFetridge

In this slim book from Nieves, Geoff writes about designing for commercial art-”Making commercial art is a way for me to better understand everything in the world I did not make. The satisfaction I get from Commercial Art comes from affecting the already-made world, the world I am stuck with.” Geoff has surely affected our world. He was the art director of Beastie Boys magazine Grand Royal, created the opening title sequences for Adaptation and Virgin Suicides, made products for Nike, videos for Simian and the Avalanches and tons of graphics for t-shirts, skateboards, wallpaper and posters. You can watch a really good short documentry on him here. This book is a great little accompaniment to his show Bend the Void at MU in Eindhoven which you can see a video about here. You can pick up a copy of this and many other great books at the Nieves store here.

The first time I saw Geoff’s work was at an arty book shop in Japan 5 or 6 years ago and I fell in love with his simple, retro drawing style. Well, I didn’t fall in love, per se, I just really liked it. I fell in love when I saw his video for Whitest Boy (one of the members of Kings of Convenience):
