Book By Its Cover

Any book showcasing designers like Ray Fenwick,The Heads of State, and Paula Scher is a must have. Focusing on vintage or vintage inspired type, this book gives a wide variety of work from posters to packaging. There are a lot of examples here and next to each image is a short paragraph with the designers intention along with the credits and name of the primary font used- which can be super helpful. I do think the design of the book suffers slightly with all these paragraphs and so many examples. The images are kept small for the most part, no bigger than half a page. I would have liked to see some of those letter-pressed posters up close or details of some of the more ornate hand drawn typefaces. Either way this book is a great reference for some of the best current designers. Pick up a copy here.

Wow, looks good- I definitely want to try and pick up a copy. Even though I like both- it’s actually really nice to see a design book with more writing about the examples they used, instead of it being entirely visual…

I spent a long time looking at this book the other day in the bookstore. I can verify that it is very, very cool.

Ugh. I wrestled with the more work vs. bigger pictures thing when I was putting New Vintage Type together. I loved the work so much that I probably crammed too much in… We’re doing sort of a follow-up now, and I’m going to make an effort to give things a little more breathing space.

Thanks for the kind words! Gail
