Book By Its Cover

Frank Chimero

Speaking of self-publishing, I ordered this book from Frank Chimero’s Lulu shop. I’m a huge fan of Frank’s work which I first found through flickr. He is working on a states project now- using the shape of each state to make an illustration out of it. The results are hilarious so far and now available as prints to purchase. This book The Small Print is “an on-going exploration in creating lots of tiny things. Each design is meant to be reproduced small(no larger than 6×6″) and is meant to only focus around communicating one idea.” The graphics are textured in some way- I like that the edges aren’t crisp lines and there’s this residue over everything, like how dust looks on old film. (The Lulu printing job seems brighter than my Blurb trial and Frank was able to do a cover wrap which I didn’t have the option for. Also he doesn’t have an annoying last page that he had to slice out of each book. I’m trying Lulu next.) Frank also has a really fun blog where he posts latest design finds but also really funny finds like this one that make my day. So make sure to check out- his states project, his work, his blog and this book for a good time.
