Book By Its Cover

11.1.07
Hiroshi Eguchi

This book luckily is in both English and Japanese. I picked it up in the big Japanese bookstore Kinokuniya. In the introduction the author/editor talks about his love for the covers of books. He mentions getting a thrill out of searching through flea markets paperback sellers and recognizing the illustrators and graphic designers by their look. This book contains covers of over 300 paperbacks from around the world published from the late 1950s to the 1970s. The chapters are broken up into countries. I recognized a ton of my favorite superstar designer’s covers immediately- Paul Rand, Bruno Munari, Olle Eksell, Seymour Chwast, Dick Bruna- but there are also tons of designers and illustrators, especially the Japanese ones, I don’t recognize whose covers I love. The book has a nice simple layout- images of the paperbacks at almost actual size or stacks of their series so we can see the spines. Just the edges of the paper are blue- does anyone know the name for that is? It’s no surprise this is a PIE book- which also means it will be pretty hard to find. You can try to buy it from Kinokuniya online shop but make sure you have your google translator ready. (ISBN4-89444-518-2)

Interesting that the editor of this book loves collecting books and book covers in the same way Julia collects books on this blog. It’s sort of a “book by it’s cover” in printed form.

What an immensely valuable book to get a hold of. Not just from a historic perspective and a visual level, but a cultural one too. To be able to explore cover after cover from the world over…
what a great contribution. Gotta get it.

What a beautiful looking book. I have never really considered book covers before. But those covers are really interesting. I need to head to some thrift stores this weeked.

I love looking at book covers as art. I just found a flickr group called the Penguin Paperback Spotters Pool that collects Penguin paperbacks from the 50s-70s. Very inspiring!

Thank you for posting about this book - it’s just wonderful! I’m just sad I can’t get hold of it myself… (put it on the blog - love your description!)
