I was browsing the magazine section in Borders the other day with my parents and came across this 3×3 Illustration Annual. I don’t usually buy annuals because they are usually a $20+ pricetag and I have an ever growing bookmarks page full of portfolios just a click away. But I just couldn’t put this book down. Every page had amazing work and I recognized more than half the names as some of my favorite illustrators. The quality of the work was just too outstanding and I kept flipping and flipping that when my parents were ready to go, I had to hold them up to buy it. I don’t know much about 3×3 magazine or their contests but apparently I should! You and I can learn more here.

I have been drooling over this book for months and now that I bought a new camera I can actually share it with everyone. It’s called Formal Addictive Programs by Nadine Nakanishi of Sonnenzimmer. In this first release by Nadine she attempts to shed some light on her creative process, while “focusing on the commonalities of figurative and abstract images” (her words, not mine). The book offers 18 simple instructions to help the reader expand upon a singular idea. For example, the first couple instruction in the book go something like this…

#1 Draw a grid system of an existing drawing and establish anchor points.
#2 Focus on those anchor points.
#3 Connect your anchor points while disassociating yourself from your original drawing. Connect them while envisioning a new one.

Not only does the book help with some free-form exploration, the production of the book is super on point including a screenprinted vellum dust jacket, a beefy text weight stock on the inside and 2 color offset printing. If this book doesn’t help you explore some new directions in your work then either you are really amazing or slightly delusional. Pick it up from the Sonnenzimmer store.
From patterned end pages of butter-people having sex on bread to poems like Ghetto Love, this zine will surely have you cracking up. There’s also an advice column from an all knowing Mother Hen and horoscopes that motivate you to start body-building. And while the inside is full of fun illustrations, handdrawn type treatments and comics, the sexy front and back cover have to be my favorite. You can pick up a copy here for only 5 bucks.

This morning I was saddened to learn that illustrator Nick Dewar has passed away. He was an extreme talent in the illustration industry. He had an incredible sense of humor and amazing skills which combined to make wonderfully fun and smart work. I was so lucky to have him share his unique sketchbooks on this blog. And he also created an awesome piece for our forthcoming Exquisite Book- see below.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

John Broadley is coming out with an anthology of all the many handmade books and artwork he has made from 1996-2008. A while back I bought one of his books at PictureBox’s table at MoCCA and have remained intrigued by his work ever since. I asked John if he would do a small interview about his work and this new book and he happily agreed:

What is your background in art? Were you formally trained?

Yes, I did a degree in graphic design at Liverpool Polytechnic, UK. 1988-91.

When did you first start making books? And why books?

I’d made some at Liverpool, but it was 1996 when I made the first in the series of books I’m making now. From 91-96 I was working as a freelance illustrator. I stopped doing that and took a full-time job and started drawing in my spare time. The first books are just collections of drawings done in a certain period. The original drawings are shoved in boxes, carrier bags, so having them reproduced in book form was a way of preserving them.

They are always handcrafted and very limited editions. It seems like so much work goes into each copy. Please explain why you enjoy working this way.

I like to make them look a little better than the photocopied/stapled ‘zines’ that they essentially are by giving them hardbacks, end-papers and occasionally hand-colouring. I’d make 10 or 20 copies and send some out to friends and some to art directors, small publishers etc, but, apart from a few illustration commissions, the speculative ones generally came back return post. With a growing pile of books I didn’t know what to with, I didn’t really consider having a couple of hundred professionally printed.

Your comics are often strange, surreal and absurd and often hard to follow in a linear way. Where do you get your ideas and inspirations for these “stories”?

I haven’t got any grounding in comics, so I’m not really approaching the idea of a comic strip from the same place as other people might. To me, it was a way of presenting drawings which had previously been floating free on a page. As soon as I’d put three panels together I instinctively started adding speech bubbles. The strips don’t have a narrative flow, and there aren’t any punch-lines. I pick up lots of second hand books on films, supernatural, nature, stamps, encyclopedias etc which I use as visual references, whilst also collecting lines of dialogue and nuggets of useless information which will form the text of the comics. I match text to pictures quite randomly, most of the time I can’t remember what I’ve drawn.

It feels like the characters and scenes from your work are from another era. What era is this? Is there another time period you would have liked to live in?

It’s not set in one era in particular. Predominantly it’s all set in the kind of central European village as seen in Hammer horror films or the Universal ones of the 1930s. But there are also elements of 1960s kitchen sink drama, figures from medieval England, 50s film noir and science fiction – I also like to drop in panels showing the absolute banality of modern life. It all exists side by side – a panel may contain electricity pylons next to a castle with someone dressed in plus fours and a hat – you could probably see that in some parts of the UK right now. The place were I grew up, a mill valley in Yorkshire, is in there quite a bit too. I’m fascinated by folk-lore and ‘olde’ language; fairs being called ‘feasts’, the temperance movement, as well as traditions which have lasted; for example, in Yorkshire there’s an occasional festival called the Denby Dale Pie, where thousands of people would congregate to eat a portion from a 20ft meat pie.

How did this big anthology John Broadley’s Books come about?

I entered a competition, which was run by the Observer newspaper, in conjunction with Jonathan Cape, to create a short story designed to run across a double-page spread of the publication. My entry, which consisted of 96 WFA panels, didn’t fulfill the requirements of the ’story’ aspect as it had no narrative, but it caught the eye of the judges and I received an email from a director at Jonathan Cape asking me if I’d like to bring some work in. When he saw my books he asked If I could come back with ideas on how to present them all in one volume.

Can you tell us a little about what you’ll find in this book?

It’s a purely visual collection of images from a selection of my books. There are reproductions of virtually all of the covers, as well as end-papers and title pages, while some of the books are reproduced in their entireties. Most of the content is made up of my comic strips, but there’s also a section of drawings from the early books and a number of pages from an illustrated version of ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’. It’s very close to the feel of one of my hand-made books, as it’s basically the pages lifted straight from the original editions.

And lastly, can you give us a brief “day in the life” of John Broadley?

I actually have a full time job on a night shift – something completely unrelated to art. I try to manage to do an hour’s drawing before leaving for work. As it’s nights, I get every other week off, but then I’m looking after my 3 year old twins and a 6 year old, so again, the artwork has to wait until the evening. If I’m working on strips, I’ll try to do three panels a day, other work I’ll do in bits and then assemble in photoshop.

Thanks so much to John for sharing! The book will be out in March published by Jonathan Cape, an imprint of Random House UK. (You’ll be able to buy it from Amazon soon here- so you can add it to your wishlist now.)

Not only is it a cooking bible (apparently it’s the French’s equivalent to How To Cook Everything which I use all the time) but the illustrations and design are immaculate. It has great clean typography throughout, beautiful images of select dishes and incredibly fun illustrations by Blexbolex- whose recent book I featured here. When my book came in the mail it had this gigantic ugly yellow sticker on it. And since I had bought the book mostly because of the illustrations there was no question that this sticker had to be removed. Well, I ruined my cover wrap trying to get it off. Usually they put those very easy peel stickers on books. I assumed that’s what this was, but oh no, half the paper ripped as I pulled it up. So I tried to stick it back down and that didn’t work either. So how I have an awful half ripped cover- which kills me! I almost want a new copy (hint hint Phaidon) because it bothers me so much. The cover wrap opens up into a large poster sized drawing. The illustrated chapter openers that stretch a full spread are my favorite part. But then throughout the book are playful spot illustrations which correspond to the recipes. I haven’t cooked anything from the book yet. I’m not even sure I want to keep this book with my other cookbooks or secure a nice place for it on my art book shelves. Get a copy of the book here- but if it has a sticker on it- don’t mess with it!

I am so in love with Steve Powers’s (aka ESPO) recent project A Love Letter for You, which is a series of fifty murals he made for City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. The murals can be best viewed from the elevated transit line running along 45th to 63rd streets along the Market Street corridor. I’m definitely going to take a trip to Philly soon and visiting his work will be my first stop. But for those who can’t make it, there are supposedly two books coming out documenting the project and a fun interview here. In the meantime, I was looking to fill more of my Steve Powers fix and decided to purchase this book published a few years ago. It’s full of his graphic work and awesome type designs. The book has lots of detail images so you can really see his paint strokes in some of the pieces. Pick up a copy here.

When I first flipped through this book, I noticed something was odd about the some of the photos of the studios. I couldn’t put my finger on what it was- maybe the lighting? Turns out half the photos of the studios are actually photos of miniatures of the studios crafted by artist Joe Fig. It blows my mind how incredibly crafted these little dioramas are! Every tiny paint tube, paint splatter, dirty palette, and rag is recreated at a tiny scale- even some of the artists at work. Joe visited these painters, Fred Tomaselli, Amy Sillman, Chuck Close, Ryan McGinness, to see their studios firsthand for reference. He also interviewed each of the artists about their work and their studio. He asked them questions like “When you are contemplating your work do you sit or stand? ” or “How far along are you on this painting”. I love reading the personal honest answers from the artists. These interviews, pictures of his dioramas, and photos of the real space are all collected in this interesting book which you get right here
I am more than thrilled when an incredible artist such as Lars even has heard about the site, let alone wants to contribute to it. Lars work is interesting and impressive in every way. From realistically drawn elements to very stylized figures, I am most intrigued when he mixes his drawings with collage and creates layers of imagery for your eyes to get lost in. Check out more of his work here and keep up with him on his blog here.
