Book By Its Cover

1.7.10
Richard Barnes

The most beautiful book came in the mail yesterday thanks to Princeton Architectural Press. Even upon opening the padded mailing envelope and seeing the cover photograph, I knew this book was going to be special. I immediately recalled my trip to Rome where I stood looking up mesmerized by the patterns the flocks of birds were making over the skies. It was magical. And this book feels equally magical with one out of the four section devoted to photographs of these swarms of birds. This is the first monograph of photographs by Richard Barnes. His work for over ten years has been focused mostly on “documenting the way we assemble, contain, and catalog the natural world.” Another collection of his photographs in the book are of parts of uninstalled dioramas from museums and taxidermy animals still in their shipping crates. There is also a section of photographs of exploded skulls and then lastly photographs of bird’s nests floating in black space. Each collection even more intriguing than the last. Get a copy here

Those bird swarms are absolutely stunning!

Last year a friend and artistic colleague of mine released a recording of a massive bird meeting at Astra Park in Romania. It’s available as a free mp3 recording – though if anyone’s interested, that way please:
