When Matt and Jenny were visiting me in New York we took a stroll around the shops in Soho. While at the Taschen store, we admired the murals covering the walls. Then while browsing the design shop Moss, we were drooling over their textiles and found one design that was obviously made by the same artist as the murals we just saw. That artist turned out to be Beatriz Milhazes, an established artist and designer who is best known for mixing her Brazilian cultural aesthetic with Modernist painting styles. After I got home from our city excursion, Beatriz’s name would not get out of my head- it sounded so familiar. Then I remembered. I once bought a book of her work just from seeing the book’s cover on Amazon. This is that book. You would think that since I had a book of this artist’s work I would have recognized it when we saw it. The truth is this book is so much text and so little plates that I remember being very disappointed by it. But after rediscovering her work I recently took it out for another look. I love the pieces in the book, but wish they were presented bigger. I also still wish there was more of them- I am sharing about half of them. But there is a great interview with her by Christian Lacroix- everything printed in both French and English. If anyone knows a better book with more samples of her work, please share the title below. For now you can get this book here |
