Book By Its Cover

Toshiyuki Fukuda

Sorry about the comment blocking. This is a glitch in the system that happens every so often and I have to go in to fix it. If you notice you can’t comment, please alert me so I can fix it. Thanks to Sara for alerting me this time. It should all work now.

I have had Toshiyuki Fukuda’s website bookmarked for a long time. So when I saw this book featured on a shelf at Printed Matter last week, I immediately grabbed a copy. I love how he uses minimal shapes to describe something but then fills them with incredible texture. Check out his site and see what I’m talking about, especially the “animals” section. His colors are also a great mix of muted and brights. This book is all abstract work but I like it all just as much. It’s such a mystery to me how he creates these great textures- sometimes it seems like thick wrinkled layers of paint. Other times it seems to be bleeding thin paint. Get this book here. (Someone needs to get his children’s books to America! and those postcards and stuffed animals 14-18 here.)

you’re very welcome! must be the most annoying thing…

and i must say wow! to this book – so lovely (i really love the textured effect, the use of colours, shapes and space). hopefully we can get hold of it here in europe also as i’d really love a copy!

a wider circulation of these children’s books would be wonderful – and a translation would perhaps also be interesting…?
