Book By Its Cover

3.21.07
Shu Hung and Joseph Magliaro

There is such a fine line between craft and fine art these days. I suppose it’s decided by the artists themselves. (I’d love to hear your opinions on this!) By Hand, new from Princeton Architectural Press, features fine artists who use techniques that most people would consider crafty- sewing, knitting, rug making, carving, book-binding and collage. The results are amazing. Robyn Love knits site specific blankets and installs them around the streets, wrapping public scupltures, parking meters or sign poles. Robert Conger weaves rugs. One of them is a scene from the Price is Right called The Big Wheel. Kent Henricksen embroiders scenes into found fabrics and textiles he makes. And there are twenty nine other artists featured along with artist statements and photos of their work.

how great, i just bought this book and i love it! and it is the first one on your site-very cool-

the illustration i just did for kitchen sink magazine was about that very line that divides/connects fine art and crafts – i actually bought this book before i got the assignment…

one thing i really like about the book is how the artists represented describe what they are up to and what they are thinking about, rather than it being just a summary of artist’s bios…

I just ordered this book and I’m really excited to read it. Blurring the line between art and craft is something I’ve been thinking about with regard to my own work and I’m particularly looking forward to reading the artists statments. Thank you for posting this book!
