Book By Its Cover

This is another book my friends brought me back from China. It’s a book of mostly Chinese traditional intricate paper cuttings mostly of small scenes with people animals and flowers. Some of them are really intense with extreme detailing of flowers and patterns which makes my eyes and fingers hurt just thinking about what it must be like creating one of these. There is a section of other countries paper cuts including some from America, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Mexico and Japan which gives you a nice contrast in style. The paper cuts are almost always cut from one sheet but then there are a few examples of collaged paper cuts in many colors which are very strange looking. It’s definitely a real inspiring book for pattern motifs. Here’s the ISBN- 978-7-5019-6099-6.

My mom was born in Denmark, where they do lots of paper cutting (we call it “scherenschnitte” which is a hilarious word that is actually German). Anyway, I have tried using the little (verrry little) scissors it takes to make such paper cuttings. It’s hard work! The above are so detailed and pretty!

They sold these little envelopes with cut paper designs everywhere in China. I’m guessing they’re done by machine now?
