review by Ines Christine Geisser I’m sad to say this is Ines’s last guest blog post! I’ve really enjoyed the books she’s shared and really hope she’ll be willing to come back again to show us more. Huge thanks to Ines!! Remember to check out her work and follow her on her blog. (Click on her name above to see more about her too.) Katrin Stangl originally made these woodcuts for a book named “Warum das Kind in der Polenta kocht” (”Why the child cooks in polenta”) by Aglaja Veterany, a Romanian writer that grew up in a circus. The book is about her childhood. I love the text and the way it is written (it has a very special layout). There’s a French translation but I (again) couldn’t find an English version. You can buy the book with the original prints by Katrin Stangl here. It’s an edition of 40 books and if I had the money I would definitely buy it. As I am just a poor student and artist I was more than happy to find “Cirques” in a very nice bookstore in Lyon, France. “Cirques” is written by Jean-Luc A. d’Asciano and it’s seems like the text goes well with the images. I can’t say anything about the text, as it is very lyrical and my French just doesn’t go that far. But I’m deeply content just looking at the beautiful illustrations and the lovely made book. You can find more of Katrin Stangl’s work here. She mainly works with original printing techniques like wood- and linocut or lithography. She also made a “tolles Heft” (”the terrific booklets”, I already wrote about them here entitled “Wenn man so die Welt durchblickt” with poems by Ernst Herbeck. She’s currently living and working in Cologne, Germany and works as a free-lance artist. |
