Drawings for Dante

Why am I posting another old Marcel Dzama book? Because I will never stop loving him. But really because I wanted a good reason to show you THIS. Holy Moly! Marcel Dzama’s paintings come alive in this insane music video. I was so so excited to see this incredible video. It is Department of Eagles’ “No One Does It Like You,” produced by the Directors Bureau, directed by Patrick Daughters and Marcel Dzama, and featuring costumes and sets designed by Marcel Dzama. I love the singing ghost, the dancing hooded girls in pointy boots and skeleton faced soldiers. It’s so perfectly eerie in that same playful way all of his work is. The muted tones and strange blue sky are such an incredible palette. When my friend Jenny told me there’s a Marcel music video my first thought was someone must have animated his drawings. I would have never predicted a live action interpretation. Go Marcel! The song is really good too. This premiered at MoMA last week.

This book below was published on the occasion of his 2002 show at Timothy Taylor Gallery in London. It’s a nice collection of drawings that seem a lot simpler and less controlled as his more recent work. The back has a bunch of sketchbook pages. The book is a limited edition of 1000 and mine came signed- not sure if they all did. Find one here.
