Book By Its Cover

Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art

After seeing a Fred Tomaselli in the Whitney Biennial in 2004, I ordered three books of his work. This is by far my favorite of the three. The cover is a huge foldout of a detail of Gravity’s Rainbow. Seeing close-ups of Fred’s work is definitely necessary. His pieces contain real pills and real leaves from drug plants collaged with cut-outs from books and magazines of all different things- birds, flowers, butterflies, bugs and parts of people’s bodies. He arranges all the pieces between different layers of thick clear epoxy resin – creating a little bit of depth to the images. This book was produced in conjunction with a show of the same title which was on view at the Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art back in 2001. It has nice big photos of some of my favorites pieces. The design of the text is so clean and simple- a good contrast to Fred’s work. Unfortunately the book is out of print but there are still some copies from Amazon sellers available(for a hefty price.)

There are other books of his work that are not out of print and ridiculously expensive. This one is just my favorite of the bunch.
