Book By Its Cover

3.19.08
Mat O’ Brien

I happened to come across this book while checking out Seems Publishing and couldn’t resist. This guy can really draw- but then he takes his drawings and cuts them up and collages them back together to make these crazy looking portraits. The features may be upside down or in the wrong spots and different pieces are drawn on different colored papers creating really strange but beautiful faces. He adds small penciled in funny commentary or descriptions to his work. The book also has a page of post-its with his writings and a page titled Thirteen Rules for Drawing with the first being “What difference does it make?” and the second “Wear something blue”. I’m not sure what I think of all the writing but the pictures sure are pretty. You can pick up a copy of this well printed perfectbound here.
