Book By Its Cover

Wieland Schmied

I have just contacted everyone you’ve nominated to share sketchbooks. We should be getting some great ones in the next few weeks. Thank you all for these suggestions. The series will return hopefully next week.

This is a small book of the renowned Austrian architect and artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser(1928-2000). Ok I’ll admit I had no idea who this guy was. I was attracted to the nice small black book with shiny metallic paintings. I thought the work was pretty weird and psychedelic. Then on the train home I read the introduction and learned this guy is ridiculously famous. I’m sure you’re all shaking your A+ art history heads at me right now. I’m really not sure how I might have overlooked him in the past. This is book was a catalogue first published on the occasion of an exhibit in 1973 in New Zealand and Australia. It has 9 metallic colors not including gold and silver and is all printed on black paper which does wonders for his bright palettes. It is mostly set in the typeface Regentagschrift which Hundertwasser designed himself. Apparently all of these were Hundertwasser’s requirements and he designed every last bit of the book himself. If you’re like me and never heard of the guy, learn more here. You can get the book here.

His art is really cool and I think in Europe everybody knows him. I´ve been to the Hundertwasser Museum in Vienna and not only are the walls crooked, but also the floors. I loved it. And I´ve been to a few of his buildings as well:

Hundertwasser is one of my favorite artists!
I really really really love his work and his filosophy. I have this book, it’s little but very nice. Specially the shinny parts! :)

I loved his work growing up. My family is Austrian and they used to send stamps for my brother to collect. I remember this beautiful stamp, which I snaffled away.

Crazy work. I love his work, just been in Magdeburg. I wish every building would be built like his…..it works, why not? I live in a city that is so square and gray…. we miss pieces like this!
