Book By Its Cover

I don’t know what took me so long to get this book. I don’t think I realize how many amazing talents they featured. Illustration Play is about illustrators/artists who use interesting mediums to make their work. From stitching to woodburning to collages made of ordinary objects, there’s a ton of really interesting techniques going on. I especially like AJ Fosik’s animal sculptures made from wood chips and other materials, which I have seen in person before. Also Jenny Hart’s embroideries of musicians always excite me along with Rob Ryan’s intricate paper cuts. Ian Wright’s works made of all different kinds of arranged objects, mascara sticks, paper cups and coins are so impressive. And then there’s the hilarious portrait of a McDonald’s employee of the month made out of meat by Sandrine Pelletier. (My favorite, Steve Harrington, is also included since he uses silkscreen and collage together. Am I ridiculous for buying this when I don’t even have a laptop yet? I couldn’t resist!) Besides a small gallery of images for each artist, the back has a quick interview with everyone in their own handwriting. Get a copy here.

ps. for a good time check out the Gene Bilbrew sleazy 1965 book covers on Dull Tool Dim Bulb here. So nice!

Yay, I love Jenny Hart’s work! A few of her pieces were for sale at Yard Dog in Austin, but I don’t know who represents her these days.
