These are stunning drawings. They remind me of DaVinci. It's so interesting to be able to see the process and more amazing that the artist is so invested in his audience--even adapting the paper size to convenient framing. And a nice guy too!!!

Eight or nine years ago, I befriended an artist named Farel Dalrymple at a music festival in the midwest. We kept an old-fashioned pen and paper correspondence for a while, and he would often express that I was welcome to visit him in NYC anytime. As a very small town girl, this offer was quite appealing. So after graduating from high school, I went to NYC with my best friend for a week. We stayed with Farel in Brooklyn, and we met his roommate James Jean. I can verify that James took his sketchbook EVERYWHERE. We often watched him sketch, trying not to peer over his shoulder too much. I can also say that I am the proud owner of a beautiful James Jean original drawing.
Both Farel and James are amazingly talented. They are also great guys. I sometimes marvel at how they graciously hosted two high school girls in their tiny apartment for a week. We were, no doubt, annoying in our own ways. They were super accommodating and fun, though.
Thanks for this post. It brought back some great memories of that trip. I might have to put these books on my Christmas list.

I agree. I am a much bigger fan of the first book which has all those beautiful sketchbook drawings layered in different media. His illustrations are really good- but somehow not as impressive.

wow his sketchbooks are amazing! It seems strange that his final illustrations looks so computer made- anime style when he is such a master at classic mediums like pencil and paint and he renders so perfectly realistically. I wish he would make work that looks more like these sketchbook pages but really big- how amazing would that be!
