Book By Its Cover

Paul Pope

This is a great wide range collection of Pope’s work, from his erotica to his posers for bands to his manga. The best part is that in between each section Pope has written essays about his life his work and his experiences working on projects for Suicide Girls and Kodansha (Japan’s largest manga publisher). It’s a real treat to read about his upbringing and what it was like for him as a nine year old seeing manga for the first time. The book has nice big photos of a variety of his work and even has a fold out poster of a sexy girl listening to headphones which I am tempted to rip out and hang up somewhere in my studio. There’s a lot of really nice erotic drawings in this book which you’ll have to buy the book to see. I’ve only included the PG ones below. This book is published by Adhouse Books and you can get a copy on their site right here.

Hi Julia, I really love your blog concept. I am book-obsessed (I always joke with my boyfriend that if he wants to go bankrupt he should take me to a bookstore, not a fancy restaurant…), and very sensitive to book covers. Actually, just yesterday, I wrote about old Penguin covers on my blog: http://mary-laure.blogspot.com/2008/01/nancy-mitford.html#links
Maybe we could exchange links?

I actually just picked up 100% and Heavy Liquid at our local library over the holidays (I was shocked to see that they had graphic novels). Pope’s brushwork is incredible, really energetic without seeming overworked.

His books were so great I went ahead and bought a batman story he did (Batman 100) and a solo comic he did for DC comics.
