Book By Its Cover

Linda Norden, Sarah Sze

I was walking with my boyfriend Matt the other day and we passed a bookstore. I pointed to a book in the window I thought looked interesting from the cover and he said- Sarah Sze!- she’s my favorite artist. I didn’t know who she was nor that Matt even had a favorite artist. When I got home that evening I ordered the book as a surprise for Matt but also because I was curious what his favorite artists work looked like. Well, he has good taste because it turned out Sarah’s work is awesome and like nothing I’ve seen before. She makes huge sculptural installations pieced together with all different small everyday objects. They feel so light, web-like and really just elegant. They really transform the space and the shadows they cast are also spectacular. This is the first monograph that covers all of her work- sculptures, installations, paintings and drawings. The photographs in the book are big and really nice themselves. I imagined seeing one of these sculptures would be incredible. As I got further in the book I realized I did see one of them in person. There was a sculpture at the entrance to Central Park a year or so ago I thought was so cool. It looks like a corner of a building jutting out of the sidewalk and you can look into the windows to see a crazy mixing of objects arranged. It’s hard to describe- see photos here or a great slideshow of the making of here. You can also see more of Sarah’s work here and pickup a copy of this book here.

I love her work! I saw one of her pieces at the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo and then searched for more online. It’s just a-m-a-z-i-n-g!!!

If you like Sarah Sze’s work, check out the work of Cornelia Parker. This exploded shed is especially awesome.
