Book By Its Cover

John Casey

Rowan Morrison gallery and bookstore sent over their newest title Scarecrow by Oakland artist John Casey. Apparently these are “self-portraits that express his inner psyche”. Printed in a limited palette of black, silver, and red, these drawings are really grotesque and monster-like. There are bulbous hands, giant heads in pants, and wormy things that come out of holes in faces. Some of the pages are on black paper and the images are printed in silver which is really beautiful in contrast to the scary imagery. The book is set to be released on October 30th, the day before Halloween- perfect! It’s a limited edition and come signed by the artist and you can find out how to get one right here.

This calls to mind T.S. Eliot’s war torn poem of 1925, “The Hollow Men”. Here’s hoping that after the election, our collective moods will be lifted and we will have eight years of peace and “Practical Cats”.
