Book By Its Cover

Richard Brereton

I kicked myself a couple times when this book came in the mail. I’ve thought about trying to gather all the sketchbook images I’ve posted on this blog and trying to pitch a book to a publisher about sketchbooks. It’s been done before this book many times and will be done again in the future so I’m not too worried. It’s just that this book has Pablo Amargo’s sketchbook in it, which I posted a while back and Henrik Drescher’s, who I’ve interviewed here about his China Notebooks. So that’s two already! The rest of the book is full of sketches from artists around the world with bios, their picture and their thoughts on sketching. Lots of great stuff from artists I have never heard of.

And so now I invite you to tell me whose sketchbook you are interested in seeing. So far I have been picking my favorites for our series but I would love your suggestions. I will contact the artists and let them know they have been nominated to share and hopefully they’ll give us a peek. Just leave their names in the comment section below.

Some astonishing sketchbooks I saw:
Francesca Bazzurro (saw her travel notebooks on exhibition in France, but you can see it here)
Joanna Concejo (had a glimpse at her notebook on exhibition during the Bologna Bookfair in 2008, here are a few pictures of the exhibition, but none of her sketchbooks)
Irina Troitskaya (on her blog)
Christian Montenegro

What about young comic artists?

I’ve got this book – it’s amazing! Lots of the artists in it are also in Graphic 10 (the one about sketchbooks), but it’s nice to see different sketchbook pages…

Some sketchbooks I’ve seen that are really good belong to Karen Klassen, Mike Kerr and Renata Liwska – all talented illustrators with impressive sketchbooks.

Wow! Great lists so far! I second many of the artists above (esp. Betsy Walton). I also really love John Copeland’s sketchbooks and would like a closer look. Good luck deciding!

Thanks for directing me to Lauren Nassef’s sketchbook– I hadnt seen that one.

I would like to see Studio Violet specific sketches, maybe showing the development or brainstorming for those little characters and how the collaboration happened between the two artists.

Sketchbooks of collaborative studios or collectives, comparing the books of the various artists involved could be another interesting slant… ie the Royal Art Lodge or Studio Violet.

I’m flattered someone mentioned my name (thanks, Lydia), and I would love to share; unfortunately I cannot as I do not keep a sketchbook. I haven’t since I was an undergraduate and was required to. I think my work, which is on paper and is produced rather quickly, is the directly working out of ideas, and so not too unrelated to what sketchbooks. But thanks for suggesting me!
