The Elegant Cockroach

Uppercase continues to put out very interesting titles including most recently, this curious picture book, The Elegant Cockroach, about a fancy cockroach who is very lonely. Living in a big city, he grew tired of the excitement and is now looking to find love. The melancholy tale is illustrated by Stefanie Augustine whose illustrations are constructed mostly with collage in black and white, grays and browns. The palette contributes nicely to the mood of the story. Some collage pieces are just textures- wood, tile or fabrics, while other times she cuts out complete objects like chairs or buildings to build into the compositions. The book is formatted to seem like a children’s book, but I have a hard time imagining a child understanding this story. But any adult would appreciate the dark humor. Get a copy here.
