Here is the third volume of the collected sketchbooks of James Jean, who I feel I can safely call a “master” of our time. Filled with unbelievably gorgeous, perfectly rendered overlapping loose and tight sketches, we get a taste of the life of the artist. In these pages are sketches and paintings of figure models, tiny thumbnail sketches for bigger pieces, photographs, but mostly there are drawings of the world around him: his friends and travels. There are some pretty explicit but beautiful drawings and paintings of porn star Sasha Grey! And also drawings on the set of a movie with a cast including Susan Sarandon and Ellen Page. But no matter what the subject James’s work will always impress. I love the way he draws right on top of his previous drawing, layering the different moments and creating interesting compositions. From his afterword “…The drawings are evidence of an airplane ride, lunch at a cafe- moments spent waiting and looking into the craggy lines of an aging face or the folds of a loose blouse. The subject moves and rests in a different position, leaving in it’s wake a skeleton of its former place, traces of movement marked in ballpoint pen.” If you want this book, I suggest getting a copy asap. His last few books sold out quickly.
