Book By Its Cover

Kim Kelly

Happy July 4th! Today’s book is by artist Kim Kelly (no relation to the Freaks and Geeks character). Edie Fake, who’s work I’ve written about before here, was selling Kim’s book at his table at MoCCA Art Festival. I went over to talk to Edie, who is a good friend from college, and my eyes just kept drifting to this black silkscreened cover while we were talking. I love the drawing style and the color combinations in this book. The whole book is silkscreened, and many of the images use shimmering gold ink. Most of the drawings have something to do with water. In a special note from the Kim on the first page it says- “This book is about geography and oceanic proximity and how that makes your body feel. It’s also about local sausage preparation, local candy, dogs, stretching, scuba diving and some more esoteric devices for bodily harmony.” When I took the book home, my boyfriend was like- Kim Kelly is awesome, she’s my friend from Chicago. I asked him if he knew anything more about her since all the info in the book is an email address (touchinggesture@hotmail.com). He said she lives in Providence RI now, is into paganism, and is a great silkscreen artist. I second that last part.
