Book By Its Cover

Henrik Drescher

This hand-sewn book is full of mostly business men dancing. In suits, with their ties flailing, one character per page is frozen from motion in some contorted position. Each character gets a title- “Trancer”, “Pancaker”, “Supersiggernaughty”, “Swingkicker”- that helps describe their dance. The poses these characters are stuck in are so funny- arms twist under legs, legs kick over heads and back around- these are no moves a real person can do (except maybe Cirque du Soleil performers). The front has a “Table of Conscience” with a list of every dancer and page number and the back of the book tells us these were drawn between May 2003 and March 2006 in a whole list of places. You can pick up a copy or see all the dancers in this book on Henrik’s website here.

hi julia, thanks for the attention.
just to fill you in, when i made these dancers i began each one with the hands and feet drawn randomly on the page, then i connected them with the body, therefore the stressed poses.

was one of these dancers–used for a postcard from Poetry Magazine, with a poem on it ??

A great pairing.
I think I have seen it, and loved it!! Its probably in a book right now, as a marker.

His work is always grotesquely hilarious and beautiful. His book “Too much bliss” is one of my favorite books ever.
