Book By Its Cover

Liz Zanis

Liz Zanis makes tiny amazing books. Grandma Clock is especially amazing. It’s a tiny reproduction out of screen-printed balsa wood of her grandmother’s clock that holds a tiny book inside the base. The book is so small and delicate made also of silkscreened balsa. Through little illustrations and teeny tiny text, as small as possibly readable, a family anecdote is told. I am so in awe of Liz and her abilities. The story is personal and makes you smile, the clock is genuinely beautiful and the attention to detail is exquisite. I can’t believe she printed wood grain or the wallpaper patterns. There’s even a fun surprise when you look at the back of the clock, a tiny grandma dress and pair of shoes are printed inside. If you are interested in purchasing or learning more about some of Liz’s work you can email her at liz.zanis[at]gmail.com. Also you can see more of her book projects here or here.

The amazing intricasies of technique aside (but not dimished), Liz’s work, this piece for example, articulates an extremely perceptive and probing artistic mind–even perhaps more so, a deep, unique identification with the visual culture of everyday life as well as the cumulative experience thereof.
