Book By Its Cover

Like I mentioned yesterday, I have been residing in Leisure World the past few days. You have to be 45 or older to live in Leisure World. Every one story house in here is basically exactly the same architecture and there are over 2000 of them. Everyone has a golf cart and a Lincoln Town car in their garage. They are all perfectly manicured and all their lights go out at seven. Tonight, or I should really say this afternoon because it was four o’clock, we went to hear a man play an enormous Wurlitzer organ at a place that sells pizza and pitchers of beer. So basically we have been living inside of a David Lynch film. Leisure World is kind of like summer camp for the retired between the woodshop classes and shuffleboard courts. So in honor of living leisurely I decided to post this book How Can I Be Expected To Work On a Day Like This? Illustrator/designer/printer Ben Chlapek, hand screenprinted this 34 page little book after quitting his much hated corporate design job. Over the course of nine months, between his freelance jobs, he worked on this as his own enjoyable project. Each page is an unexpected drawing, sometimes silly, sometimes just fun. One spread asks you to raise your hand if you feel worthless, another informs you that trees have sex when you aren’t looking. The book is full of different kinds of paper and lots of different color inks which makes it that much more exciting to turn the pages. You can pick up a copy of this book at Ben’s Etsy store right here.

Totally awesome! I want 30 so I can give them to my culturally stunted friends and we can drink pitchers of dark beer and eat lots of pizzas and eat Ho-Ho’s and look at the pictures. If two trees have sex in the forest and nobody is there to hear them, do they make little trees? I feel worthless . . . Thanks, Ben!
