Book By Its Cover

Alice Melvin

Blog reader Rita wrote to me about book artist Alice Melvin. On Saturday the book Moving In, which I ordered from her website, came in the mail all the way from Scotland(I love good mail days!). Alice describes Moving In as “a concertina book inspired by the experience of moving into a new home.” Once the book comes out of the sleeve, you decide what happens next. It’s folded in all different ways so that you can look at it in so many perspectives. You can create little living spaces each time you turn a page, sometimes believable ones and sometimes complete disorder. The drawings help create that confusion- silverware is flying out of the drawer, water and bubbles flow from the bathtub and chairs are piled on top one another. It’s all silkscreened and comes in different color combinations. This book is too much fun to remind me that moving isn’t. Check out all of Alice’s books, her illustrations and an A-Z about her here.
