Book By Its Cover

Katy Horan

Katy Horan, whose sketchbook we recently got a peek into, sent over a brand new beautiful handmade book. It’s a hardcover accordian fold- all silkscreen printed in two colors. Each page has a “spirit” on it- or as I can describe it- a skeletal face printed over interesting patterned graphic. I love that the transparent white faces slightly overlap the underneath green gray design. The pages each are lettered- I suppose so you can refer to an individual spirit. This is only a very limited edition of 18 available at at her etsy store right here. Thanks Katy!

um.. is it just me or is spirits in the title spelled wrong? Is that intentional?

I’ll respond to that as the maker of the book…It actually was not intentional! It’s the first book that I have made and I overlooked that mistake as I was focusing on all the technical aspects of the book. It’s unfortunate, but I guess these things can happen when everything is handmade!

Misspelled and all (I can’t even begin to count the number of times I’ve been down that road), this is really really beautiful!

Thank you Katy for your honest answer- as I was sure for some reason it was meant to be that way. This is such a minor mistake that easily can be overlooked esp. since the book is totally gorgeous. This just accentuates the handmade quality and makes it even more of a collectible!

What a beautiful book!
And, having worked in publishing, that’s a not-uncommon mistake. Sometimes the most obvious ones are the ones that slip by.

actually, it’s kinda funny….my kids and i have been looking at an optical illusion book this week and several of the pages are like that. The trick is that it takes so long to find it. Our minds just read it the way we think it’s supposed to be. So, Kate, maybe you just want to chalk it up as an optical trick on the reader. Sneaky…..just like a little spirit.

The mis-spelt word (I don’t want to call it a mistake!) actually adds interest, intrique and mystique.
