Book By Its Cover

Today I am sharing one of my favorite recent projects- working on this dessert cookbook for Storey Publishing. I made the pattern for the cover wrap and eight other dessert patterns to introduce each chapter of the book. Drawing desserts is so much fun but can leave your mouth watering! I remember craving chocolate so bad while working on that brownie design. Besides constantly wiping the drool off my mouth while drawing, I also had the challenge to use only two Pantone colors for all the interior patterns. In the end I think this worked to my benefit because it tied all the different patterns together nicely with the rest of the book. Storey was so easy to work with and I was very pleased with the design of the rest of the book. I like that this book stands out among the other cookbooks you see in stores because it’s illustrated. Every new cookbook tries to out do the next with how much glossier the food photography can get. It’s refreshing and at the same time nostalgic to have an illustrated cookbook on your shelf. You can get a copy here. I also illustrated the cover wrap for the companion cookbook which you can also get here.

What lovely illustrations, Julia! I can’t wait to see this book in person. This post made me remember the cookbooks my mother had that I would pore over as a little kid. Well before I could read, I was mesmerized by the wonderful drawings. I even added some crazy pencil scribbles of my own —Maybe because they were of such familiar(and tasty!) items I thought I could and should take a crack at it too.
