Paul Butler

review by Chad Kouri

Now this is what art is all about! Bringing people together that would have never met otherwise and getting some conversation moving. Paul Butler accidentally fell upon a great concept while in the mist of a huge warehouse party he co-hosted back in 1997. During the party people started picking at a big pile of magazines that were stacked up in the space and everyone ended up making a bunch of collages throughout the night! From then on, Paul went from casually hosting glue and tape get-togethers to traveling around the world having collage parties. He made a point of trying to bring people of different backgrounds together to interact with each other while creating. And we are not talking quiet gallery, lesson giving atmosphere. We are talking about drunken loud music parties. So, in closing, Collage Party is a documentation of parties over the past 10 years. I’m not gonna lie, I did not finish reading the interview that is sprinkled throughout the book as of yet. But I love drinking with loud music and making collages! The only thing I can think of that would be more fun is a ton of people with me doing the same thing!

Pick it up at ACAD.

I remember going to “drawing parties” at risd. But they were never quite as fun as you’d think. Maybe it’s just risd nerds but everyone was quietly drawing sharing markers and sipping drinks. Collage parties sounds much more fun. Oh but have you been to a “quiet party”? I did that once too. Nobody at the bar is allowed to speak. You kind of just stand around writing notes to strangers. I was single at the time and writing is a lot easier than talking when you are trying to pick up guys- especially because you can draw. But then again the male selection at the quiet party… yikes. Anyway I am a big fan of activity themed parties. I really wish I’d gone to this actually even though it probably would have hurt.

Here in London-Ontario(which is a pretty small hidden gem for art) We get together for art days but we dont really play load music and not everyone gets drunk. Party comes at night when everyone is done with their creations.

I have never seen something like this, perhaps I will get my mates to collaborate on one big collage for the new year!!!!!!

Great review!!

THAT LOOKS AWESOME. I wish I could attend a collage party! If he was hosting a party in ‘97…was it a rave? I hope.
