Book By Its Cover

4.2.07
Henning Wagenbreth

I thought this book was appropriate for the day after April Fools Day. I’m sure you’ve gotten emails from some Ugandan general, Nigerian lottery winner or the only surviving daughter of a chief from Sierra Leone asking you to transfer twenty million dollars for them. Well, German illustrator Henning Wagenbreth decided to collect all those emails and illustrate them in a fairly new softcover book from Ginko Press. The illustrations have a limited palette and look like lino-cuts or woodblock prints. I love how the type is worked into them. The simple format of the book works- email on the left, illustration on the right. The emails themselves will make you chuckle. As if anyone would believe this stuff(wait, did he say I would get twenty six million?) You can get this book pretty much anywhere right now but also don’t forget to check out Henning’s website.

Those illustrations remind me the style of the “cordel” books, a very rich cultural manifestation, typical in Brazil, mainly in the Notheast region.
