Mollie Katzen

Matt and I recently decided that we need to try to live healthier. Besides going to the gym a few times a week, I have been cooking our dinners most nights. I am not into cooking at all and every evening I have to try and think of something good to make. Mostly we eat the same four meals over and over. So I was pleasantly surprised when for my birthday, my friend Jessie got me this new edition of the Moosewood Cookbook. Written by Mollie Katzen, it’s a collection of vegetarian recipes based on the restaurant she and six other people founded in the 70s in Ithaca, New York. And while I am really eager to get my hands dirty and attempt some beet borscht, I am also worried about getting the book dirty because it is quite pretty. The entire cookbook is handwritten and each page is decorated with small spot illustrations or a cute border. In the introduction Mollie says “I handlettered the book because I intended it to be used by people I knew, or by acquaintances of acquaintances. It didn’t occur to me that some day an expanded version, still in handlettered format, would be used by over a million strangers.” Learn more about the Moosewood Restaurant here, about Mollie Katzen here and buy the cookbook here.

as an illustration is a great book, but for a bad “chef” like me, i still need tje pictures to see the result.

But for sure i could buy it just because of the delicated line drawings.

I love this book- there is a naive quality to the illustration that goes so well with the yellowed paper( is it unbleached stock, or is my copy just very old?)

Funny, I’ve been using this book for years and it never even occurred to me that the lack of photographs could be problematic. The Chilean squash casserole is a favorite of mine.

This book reminds me of being a little kid – my mom used this cookbook often. My favorite recipe is Caserola Milanese. Yum!

I also grew up with this book. My mom used it all the time, and another of her books which I think had something to do with broccoli. I was totally obsessed with that drawing of the eggplant!! Thank you for reminding me!
