Nick Dewar’s illustrations have been published in the most major publications ( The New York Times, Harpers, Time), have been seen on enormous billboards, and have appeared on the cover of books (The Devil Wears Prada for example). Basically you name it and Nick has done it. Not only are his illustrations in this really great painted style but the ideas behind them are always really smart and clever. Have a look at his larger portfolio collection on his website here. On his site he has also provided us with a “But How” section that answers a whole slew of questions about his creative process, what it’s like working for clients, how to get work and basically everything you wanted to know about the business down to “What’s the hardest thing about being an illustrator?” I am really impressed by not only his fantastic work but also his willingness to share so much of himself. Today he shared even more sending over so much of his sketch work. He has sent three parts of sketchbook work- images of his travel journals, some scans of sketches from his large boxes where he stores his piles of sketches, and images of the actual piles that come out of the boxes. And wow, when he says piles, he means piles. It’s incredible to see all these loose sheets scattered with his thoughts and ideas and to get a glimpse of how many pencil sketches it takes to get to a final. Nick- thank you so much for sharing! This has been a real treat!
