DE FLUCTIBUS = COMPENDIUM (one of a three part series called “Ephemera & Miscellanea”) is a self-published zine put out by Studio Fludd, which is based in Venice, Italy. It is beautifully printed in two colors (risograph) on various colored papers.
This zine is the perfect balance between illustration, photography, and type. The three poetically flow together throughout the pages. The combination of two ink colors and colored paper is sophisticatedly used so each new spread feels entirely fresh.
As you turn each page, you encounter different textures and tempos – as illustration, photo, and type are used with varying emphasis. When I first read through it, the whole zine felt like a mathematical equation or a scientific experiment; trying to find out what the root of life is, at its’ most fundamental level.
The zine ends, quite appropriately, with a quote form J.D. Salinger: “The fact is always obvious much too late, but the most singular difference between happiness and joy is that happiness is a solid and joy is a liquid.”
All three in this series were great – but I found this to be the strongest both visually and conceptually.
